Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
